ADVENTURE FARM & VINEYARD IS A SUSTAINABLE FAMILY FARM LOCATED IN NORTHERN ALBEMARLE COUNTY. THE STEWARDSHIP OF THE FARM’S NATURAL RESOURCES, BEGUN IN 1950 BY E. MORRIS CHISHOLM, IS CONTINUED TODAY, SOME 60 PLUS YEARS LATER.
The Vineyard began in 2007 by Mary Jane Chisholm with Carl Tinder of Tinder, Cattle & Vineyard. Area experts such as Gabriele Rausse, Chris Hill and Michael Shaps helped guide the choice of vines and the vineyard plantings. The initial thought was to grow grapes to sell with no intention of making wine. Morris Chisholm had envisioned an orchard on the same site, many years before, knowing the high elevation and orientation would be a great spot for a fruit crop.
With initial success and high-quality grapes, Mary Jane Chisholm and her granddaughter Andrea Matheson saw the potential of winemaking with their grapes. Michael Shaps had tremendous success with the grapes in making his own wine, specifically the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (which we still have a bit hidden away on reserve). The decision was made to put and Adventure Farm label on their own wines (complete with vintage photos from the Chisholm family slide collection).
So in 2012, Adventure Farm produced a small lot of Chardonnay and created the popular Gigi Red Blend with Chambourcin and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Over the next 5 years, 9 more wines would be added to the list of 100% estate grown wines available to the public in their Tasting Room near the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport. With two silver medals in the 2017 Virginia Governor’s Cup, Adventure Farm has gained official recognition of high-quality estate grown wines. See our full selection of wines here.
The vineyard continues to thrive and produce some of the most esteemed grapes in Albemarle County. Although not realized during his lifetime, Morris Chisholm’s vision evolved and was carried out to make the vineyard the reality it is today.
